Movies – Great Pieces of Entertainment

By admin, February 20, 2010 8:04 pm

Movies. Cinema. Films. Call it what you want but this mode of entertainment is very popular the world over. The technical definition of movie would be that it is (now) an audio-visual form of communication. It is a sort of art and makes up the motion pictures industry.

Movies have traveled their own evolutionary path before we see them as they are today. The need for entertainment is certainly not a new one. There are records which go back thousands of years mentioning entertainment forms like drama and music which were prevalent in those ages long ago. It was in the 1600s that the first camera was invented. Through the decades and centuries there was of course a lot of technological advancement.

The earliest avatar of the modern moving pictures was in the late 1800s where the concept of film with people and moving images took hold. All the way through to the late 19th century, movies were only a visual medium despite there being several scientists conducting experiments to incorporate sound to these moving images. And of course the concept of color had still not entered the mix. This silent and Black and White movie era threw up not only some classic films but gave rise to stars like Charlie Chaplin. Chaplin’s movies till date are amongst the most popular films in the world.

It was around the 1920s when sound became a component of films. These were distinguished from motion pictures by calling them talking pictures or talkies. The next technological advancement came in the 1960s where color was introduced into the realm of film making. It wouldn’t be too long before Black and White films and Silent films would become an obsolete form of mainstream cinema making. BnW’s and silent films are made even today but it is more for the novelty factor of theirs in most instances.

The most well known type of movies is feature films. Feature films are usually produced by major motion picture studios. There are also independent movies which are usually financed and produced without the backing of a major studio. Often times if an independent movie shows promise, a major studio might decide to take up its distribution thus opening it up to a much larger viewing audience.

While movies are made all over the world, the most famous is Hollywood. Located in Los Angeles, USA, Hollywood primarily produces English language films. There is also the Mumbai-based Indian Film Industry (Bollywood) which makes the maximum number of films every year in the world.

Hollywood is also home to the best known and prestigious awards for the film industry with the annual presentation of the Academy Awards or the Oscars as they are more commonly known.

Lastly it must be said that according to most people and even across this article, the words film and movie are used interchangeably. Technically however, it must be kept in mind that the word Film is usually used to define this medium from a theoretical, technical and artistic perspective whereas the word Movie refers to the commercial or entertainment aspect of it.

UFC 94 Flashback: GSP, Machida Gain Victories

By Ross Everett, February 10, 2010 8:56 am

Reigning lightweight champ BJ Penn entered his main event battle against welterweight kingpin Georges St. Pierre looking to become the first man in UFC history to simultaneously hold titles in two weight classes. GSP never gave him the chance to make history, as he stopped Penn after four increasingly dominant rounds to retain his belt with a TKO victory and make a compelling case for being the pound for pound best fighter in mixed martial arts.

Both fighters had considerable fan support, with vocal, flag waving delegations from the Hawaiian Islands and Canada in evidence. During ring introductions, both men received enthusiastic cheers tempered with a few boos. After the opening horn sounded, however, the Penn backers had little to cheer about while the champions supports broke out in G-S-P chants on several occasions. The first round was fairly evenly contested, with St. Pierre trying to get a first hand feel for Penns often unorthodox”but highly successful”takedown defense. GSP made several takedown attempts, but had them repeatedly stuffed by Penns incredible balance and flexibility.

Boxing guru Freddy Roach recently praised Penn as the best technical puncher in MMA, but he had no opportunity to bring this weapon to bear as he had trouble finding the range from the outset. GSP mixed up his look perfectly, either staying just outside Penns range using his 6 reach advantage effectively or more often smothering his opponent on takedown attempts. St. Pierre was unable to complete any takedowns during the first round, but easily dictated the pace and style of the bout.

GSP began to assert his dominance in round two”with Penn starting to fatigue he was no longer able to fend off St. Pierres single leg takedown attempts by balancing on one leg. GSP got a takedown early in the frame and began to mount a ground and pound assault while moving around in Penns legendary guard almost at will moving from half guard to side control with frightening ease.

The eventual outcome was foretold between rounds two and three, as the obviously exhausted Penn required a pep talk from his entourage to continue. Across the cage, GSP calmly sipped water and listened intently to trainer Greg Jacksons instructions looking for all the world that he could go 12 rounds if necessary.

Round three was similar to the previous one, with GSP taking his opponent to the mat with a decreasing level of resistance and mauling him with punches and elbows once he got there. His complete control over the BJJ black belt Penn was incredible. That may be the most exceptional thing about Georges St. Pierre”his willingness to attack his opponents strengths and success at doing so.

The fourth round was a wall to wall rout for the Canadian welterweight champion, who started by effectively trading strikes with Penn before taking him down once again and resuming his highly successful ground based attack. At this point with GSP moving around at ease and Penn mounting little resistance it was apparent that the challenger was physically spent. St. Pierre almost ended the fight on the ground, as referee Herb Dean repeatedly reminding Penn that he needs to fight back. Penn survived the round on instinct alone, moving around just enough to keep the referee from stopping the proceedings. After the horn sounded to end the fourth round, however, it was evident that Penn had nothing physically or emotionally left. As he leaned headfirst against the cage in exhaustion, an impromptu conference amongst his handlers on whether or not to continue became moot when the fight was stopped by Dean on advice from the ringside physician. There was no argument whatsoever from Penn or his entourage.

Displaying his characteristic class, GSP delayed his celebration until he had crossed the cage and kneeled by his vanquished foe to honor his competitive spirit.

Earlier in the evening, Lyoto Machida kept his undefeated professional MMA record intact with a first round TKO victory over Thiago Silva. Machida may be the best in the world at fighting while backing up, and Silva found his aggressive style working against him. Machida took his opponent down and knocked his opponent down twice”all counters as Silva was coming forward and Machida backing away. As the first round entered its final seconds, it appeared that Silva started to ease up in anticipation of the horn. Machida used this opportunity for another takedown, and then nailed his surprised opponent with a powerful punch that ended the fight.

NFL Preseason Handicapping Basics

By Ross Everett, February 9, 2010 9:03 am

Among the sports betting public there’s a lot of conflicting opinions about betting NFL preseason games. That’s not really surprising, since there doesn’t seem to be much middle ground on the subject. Overly cautious handicappers would argue that preseason football is a poor wagering opportunity. Some of the more obnoxious tout services would have you believe that short of a fixed game there is no greater “lock” that preseason football. Like most things that produce such polarized opinions, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle of the two extremes. Preseason NFL football is a unique proposition for the sports gambler, but when approached with caution, discipline and knowledge it can yield some profit.

The most compelling argument against preseason wagering is simply that the games don’t count. While there are often spots during the regular season where teams may seem more or less motivated, in theory they all want to win. That’s not something that can be taken as a ‘given’ during the preseason, however, as the individual agendas of NFL coaching staffs can very widely. Some might want to win games to establish a winning attitude, others might put a greater focus on working in a new offensive or defensive scheme. Others may prioritize evaluating talent at key positions, while others may simply want to make it through to the regular season without any significant injuries. With all of the uncertainty swirling around preseason football, handicapping wins and losses against the pointspread can be exceedingly difficult.

But like the old saying goes “every dark cloud has a silver lining”. And the divergent agendas at play in preseason football can be seen as precisely why it is a good wagering opportunity. For example, say the Superbowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers are set to play an ‘also ran’ team like the Houston Texans. By regular season standards, the Steelers would almost certainly be favored. In the preseason, however, they’ll often have a different agenda for the individual game. A “better” team has more concern about protecting key players. and usually has fewer personnel decisions to deal with. They don’t need to worry about implementing coaching changes, or creating ‘team chemistry’. As a result, ‘better’ teams frequently approach preseason games as a mere annoyance.

On the other hand, consider the ‘lesser’ team in a preseason matchup. They often have a number of key starting positions they need to fill, along with backup positions up for grabs. They may have new coaching staffs that players want to impress, new offensive or defensive schemes to implement. Most significantly, ‘lesser’ teams often view the preseason as an opportunity to build team chemistry or create a winning attitude. A team trying to rebuild can benefit from winning *any* games, regardless of whether or not they count in the standings. For a league doormat, a win over an elite level opponent can serve as a rare highlight of a losing season.

Even teams that put a low priority on preseason games don’t want to lose them all. For this reason, a longterm winning situation has been to bet on teams that lose their first two preseason games outright. Over the past twenty years, 0-2 teams in this spot have produced a winning percentage right around 60%.

There may be no greater determining factor of a team’s preseason success than the philosophy of their head coach. Some coaches just don’t like to lose *any* game, and usually these hyper-competitive teams are good preseason bets. Bill Parcells, for example, was legendary for his serious approach to preseason games. The coaches that he mentored like the NY Giants’ Tom Coughlin have to some extent carried on this legacy. While the “good” preseason coaches are often reflected in the pointspreads assigned to their team, a motivated team is almost always worth a look.

One of the best tools that a handicapper has at his disposal during the preseason is the Internet. Actually, it’s a great tool year round but during the preseason it is invaluable. The best source of information on coaching philosophies, game plans, injuries, lineup changes, etc, are the local sports pages of NFL teams. Basically, the situation during preseason is that there is a lot of interest in the team and a lot of anxious beat writers looking to write stories. The problem is that there is little in the way of real news, and for that reason you’ll find the sort of minutiae on teams and players from which you can often extract relevant handicapping information. Even if there aren’t any nuggets of handicapping gold, you can at least get a feel for the coach’s goals for the game and the amount of playing time that key players will see. Sometimes coaches will come right out and say who will play at what juncture of the game, and will occasionally go on record that personnel decisions like evaluating all of the guys they’re considering for the backup defensive secondary jobs are more important than winning. Clearly, operating with this knowledge is a distinct advantage and operating without it can be fatal. There’s nothing more frustrating than betting on a team only to have them look like they could care less whether or not they win the game. During the preseason, however, it can frequently be prevented with some simple research and analysis.

In conclusion, there are certainly strong opportunities for profit in NFL preseason wagering but its essential to understand that it cannot be approached in the same manner as the regular season. And, as always, its important to remember that there will be more strong opportunities down the road and that discipline and rigor in handicapping is just as crucial in the preseason NFL as it is at any other time of the year.

Choosing Airsoft Guns For War Game Play

By Anthony Carter, February 7, 2010 8:57 am

If you are into war games then you are most likely going to find the airsoft guns the best bang for your buck, so to speak. Realistic, life like guns that fire small but safe projectiles that reduce the injury rate of BB guns or paintball guns. These are becoming the main staple for war gamers. Unless the gun is fired at very close range, these are the safe version for gaming all over the woods or in the fields.

Using your tactical experience and your ability to put together defensive and offensive plans with your team will come together to determine the outcome of the game. The realism of the gun adds to its accuracy. Once you get a handle on how far your gun will fire you will be able to fire with greater accuracy.

Using airsoft guns to play a safer war game is not the same thing as replacing your paintball gun with an air pump BB gun. In fact, these days you can get a BB gun in the airsoft version for safer and property friendly toy guns. An air pump BB gun can still do quite a bit of damage when fired at car windows, animals, and even people. Airsoft guns are not the upgraded version but a safer way to play.

Whether you choose the spring loaded, the gas charged, or the electric charged version, you are buying a newly accepted form of play gun. These simulated weapons have been around for a long time, and they are far from newly developed, but they are newly accepted throughout the war gaming community.

Gas powered guns deliver a high degree of power and simple component use that makes them the prime gun for the serious weekend warrior. Usually filled with an environmentally friendly gas element, there is a charge time needed to power up the gun before the beginning of the game.

These are more expensive airsoft guns than the spring loaded version, but they also don’t require loading for each and every round. They do have a poor reputation of reliability when the temperature drops. Some people have reported problems as warm as 50 degrees. Others have found that the gun delivers more than reasonable reliability in climates where frigid temperatures are rare.

You can have a lot of fun playing war games and practicing your tactical skills over the weekend, but remember that these guns look like replicas of the real version. Simply using some common sense will keep all of us out in the woods keeping the war games alive and well. Those who ignore common sense courtesies as well as laws risk the fun for all of us.

Airsoft guns are replacing the BB gun as well as the paintball gun, which naturally extends their use for target practice no matter which version you choose. While the safety measures have been received successfully by many war game enthusiasts, the realism of the gun is prime, and the various price ranges allow war gamers to play on almost any budget.
